28 Sep What is an Arm Lift?
There are many different types of ‘lift’. Facelift, upper and lower Body Lifts, Thigh Lifts and Arm Lifts. But what do they do? And how do they differ from one another? Let’s zone in on Arm Lifts, explain what they are and how they could benefit you.
Your ‘tuck shop arms’ or ‘fadoobadas’ (as Kath & Kim like to call them) are creating self esteem issues and you find that you no longer want to wear short sleeves. When you do, and extend your arms out to the side, you can’t help but notice a considerable droop from your armpit to elbow, which doesn’t make you feel fit and trim. An Arm Lift, otherwise referred to as a Brachioplasty, is a procedure which rids the arms of excess skin, fat and tissue. This isn’t always a result of being overweight. Both men and women who have lost a considerable amount of weight on their weight loss journey will see the same drooping in their silhouette due to an excess of skin. Once the Arm Lift procedure is complete, you will lift your arms with confidence, knowing that you left your old ‘bat wings’ back in the cave, and they will never see the light of day again.
What happens during the Arm Lift procedure?
An incision is made from armpit to elbow on the inside of the arm. It is important to note that there will be a scar, though every effort will be made to ensure it is as thin and discreet as possible. Liposuction will then be used on excess fat and tissue to remove it from the area and once excess skin is removed, Dr Ritz will reshape the muscles around the area and seal the incision completely. The procedure is done under full anaesthesia and will require an overnight stay in hospital.
The recovery process involves wearing compression sleeves continuously for 6 weeks to guarantee successful healing. During the initial 2 weeks driving is prohibited and physical activity will be limited for the duration of the recovery period, depending on the type of activity and how quickly you are recovering.
Please note, that if you have scheduled an Arm Lift procedure, plan ahead. Surround yourself with people who are happy to help you during your recovery, stock up on your favourite food and bring the most delicious snacks to lower shelves.
What results can I expect?
Apart from a more slender, trim appearance, you will feel a sense of freedom, both through a boost in confidence and also through the removal of excess skin and tissue. Paired with regular exercise once fully healed and healthy eating, these results can be maintained long term, providing that fresh start you’ve been longing for.
